Class Summary 9/26/06

Dear Diary,

Last night after class Bobby Jenkins took me out for ice cream.  We went to Ben and Jerry’s and I had a double scoop of Chubby Hubby.  It was soooo good.  And Bobby Jenkins is sooooo cute.  Like for real.   He had on the new Pumas.  Now that I think about it his feet are smaller than mine.  Weird.  Anyway, I didn’t really want to have ice cream because it was right before karate class and I don’t feel great if I workout on a fully stomach, but it was good ice cream, and when Bobby Jenkins looks at me with those eyes its justtoo  hard to say no.  Anyway, let me tell you what we did in class:

First hour: Leo combo #2 and roudhouse kicks to pads. Then there was massive learning of Leo form #1 or #3

Second Hour: Single sinawali closed. Fh #4 with the canes, against Bobby 12 angles.  C-step/sissor stance takedown.  (Why do we do this move again?  I think there should be a poll to rename the sissor stance.)  Then there was much learning about the art of spagetti arm attacks.  Fear the pasta arms and the poultry locks…..

XOXO

Second class did Leo forms 1 and 3.  Need to work single sinawali closed.  Worked EDT #1 and #2……and I think thats it.

Dave only.

Core: Started with jab, cross, hook, though there were a number of new people who were really only doing jab, cross.  Then focused on doing forehand set #1 to the inside with the feeder holding focus mitts.  Then combined FH set #1 and jab-cross-hook into an interactive drill.  Finally, added upper-cut to the end of the sequence though didn’t spend much time explaining it.

PROMISED TO TEACH KICKS ON TUESDAY AND START INTEGRATING THEM INTO THE COMBOS ON THURSDAY
Advanced: Leo Fong form #3 against partner.  Did Naihanchi self-defense from rei and Neal’s exploding Okinawan Naihanchi move.  Practiced breakfalls briefly (more of a refresher than anything else).  Talked about lung meridian.  Did lung five take-down (introduced, er made up on the spot the concept of spaghetti arms).

Advanced class: Forehand set #3 against Bobby angles and open hand (more people need forearm gaurds!).  Practiced Leo Fong #3 (and a few refreshed Leo #1).  Did hook punch to TW-12 from Naihanchi.

Note: must make sure that people in advanced class have all material from core curriculum.

Class on College Green then the biopond

Dave on lead vocals; J on bass.

First hour: jab, cross, hook, upper cut on focus mitts left and right leads

Bobby 12 angles static; followed by forehand (fh) set #1 against 12 angles. Forehand #1 would be backhand block, forehand counter.

Worked the pokes (angles 5,6,7)  focusing on keeping elbows close to the body and generating force by moving the core.  Defender worked on block check counter at close range.

Did strikes to the air pairwise.  Progression was 1-1, 1-2, 1-3….1-12.  Then did 2-1, 2-2, 2-3….2-12.  Both left and right leads.

Continued progression from Thursday’s class: jab, defender does fh #1, attacker blocks the counter jab, defender accepts energy from the block and traps the attacker’s jabbing arm and counters with uppercut.  Things to think about include the attacker working on retracting the jab after the block; the defender wants to block with cohesion to delay the attacker’s retraction.  Defender should try to block and punch (the fh #1 motion) with very little delay between the block and punch.  Attacker should try not to over commit to their block (this progression capitalizes on the attacker not retracting their initial jab and over committing on the block.)  Defender should close distance after their punch is blocked; do not retract the punch, instead step in as if throwing a elbow in order to acquire the trap.  Note the change in range, starting from punching range the defender is closing to trapping range.

Class was on College Green.

Dave taught core class: Jab, Cross, Hook.  Did to air for a bit then with partners against pads.  Goal was to try to get people moving and used to working in timed intervals more than to really fix any problems.  Finished with Forehand set #1 Open hand.  Same gist.
J taught advanced class: Finessed forehand set #1.  Talked about the thumb-to-thumb contact from Leo.  Briefly started talking about the counter trapping opportunities.
