Dave taught

Continued Lameco inspred knee evasion / footwork.  Integrated it into the ongoing drill (Dave’s largo tapi-tapi).  Added a second vertical redonda at the end of the drill.

Person #1: Attacks person #2 with 12; Person #2 roof blocks; Person #1 responds by semi-aborting the 12 and doing a backhand knee shot; Person #2 does lameco knee evasion with forehand counter; Person #1 body shifts to stay outside of distance; Person #2 strikes with cocked horizontal backhand; Person #1 does two-handed block; Person #2 bounces off block to a vertical redonda to P1’s arm.

Random thought: if a two-handed block just deflects the attacking stick, the tip of the stick was probably not going to hit the opponents body.

Worked various aspects of the above drill, really emphasizing the mechanics of moving and striking at the same time as well as focusing on knowing when you are in distance to hit someone and when you’re not.

Covered the first 6 self-defense moves (from Naihanchi) again.  Focusing strongly on rooting.  Other focus on using body movement to execute locks (that is, removing the slack is a precursor to the actual lock and the lock often occurs when the body starts moving)

Realized that we don’t have a 6th move.  I believe Neal wants it from the “double-block”.  This needs to be figured out.

As taught by The Expunginator

Started with basic lameco step behind to get knee out of way of strike. Integrated into the roof block to power 2 drill that we’ve been working on. Attacker strikes #12, but when opponent roof blocks does a low backhand to opponent knee. Opponent combines the forehand counter after the roof block with the lameco step.

Reviewed the Naihanchi breakdown especially the catch as people wanted more practice on it. Emphasized rooting. Also taught (from a punch), “block” to LI-10/11, Kick to sp-11, backfist to face.

Did rooting drills where partner tries to pick you up. Emphasized that it’s not about the mechanics of how it works as much as being able to do it.

Sunday 8/6

Dave and I taught.  Covered bunkai from Nahanchi.  Did punch to triple warmer 12.  Palm press take down. Catch to transitional elbow lock to hammer fist to head 1.  Off a one hand push, pin hand to chest, side-step into horse stance creating wrist torque, then strike to GB 20.  To relate things back to thursday’s class, reviewed how to deal with the haymaker.  Again force on force block to pass the arm.  Reviewed pass and slap; and pass to groin strike to Hawaiian choke.  Added pass to neck control to mobility throw.

Tuesday 8/8 Dave Neal and J were in class

Started with forehand and back hand set. Realized blocks weren’t as solid as they could be.  Changed to roof block against an angle 12.  Defender blocks, redondas, then does power 2.  The initial attacker learns back to get their body out of the way of the power 2, but works on trying to do a single arm block.  Seemed to be a good drill to work on distance, timing, and developing good blocking habits.

Then we reviewed the nahanchi breakdown introduced on sunday. (see class description for 8/6)

(I just found the spell checker!  Too bad it don’t do japanese.)

Half of class taught by  PB&J’san

Covered EDT template, with standing center lock and arm bar follow-ups (covered prior to my arrival)
EDT was intended to be a reference point for how to deal with haymaker punches–a reference point raised during super sunday (7/30/06). Against a right punch did force-on-force block with left arm and stop hit to the shoulder with right hand.  Then did stop hit followed by palis-palis of the arm.  This led to left upper cut to the floating rib, followed by groin shot with the left hand (attackers hips move backward) allowing hawaiian mega choke.  Also did palis to thigh or belly slap.  Also discussed stop hit to figure 4 arm lock.

Underlying theme was approaches to dealing with a very committed attack that roughly follows angle 1 line.  Tried to link this idea with sensitivity concepts Dave has been highlighting.

August 1, 2006: Dave taught everything

Started with attacker striking 12s and defender doing a largo roof block.  Defender then did a vertical abaniko, to a power 2.  Original attacker does a 2-handed block against the power 2.   Encouraged students to wear protective gear and actually hit one another.  Empahsized “caveman” footwork.
Translated two handed block to stick against open hand.  Common theme of caveman footwork including kick to the inner thigh.  Short elbows to the body and the “I’ve got sexy hair” cover/elbow.

Finished with basic sensitivity of arm grabbing in a free form drill
